Government As Regulator
By: Toni Romero
11th grade
Government regulation is needed because without it many people think they can do whatever they want. The Government is allowed to create laws that will keep the people under authority; it also enforces such laws. But sometimes Government regulation is too constricting to certain types of people. Without government regulation, people would be able to run around freely committing whatever crimes are possibly thinkable. They might hurt others, commit traffic violations, or they might have many other minor or major violations that may harm the surrounding community.
There are many valid regulations that are needed to manage the citizens of the many communities. There are also many illogical regulations that may not be needed to control the people of the state or country. One justifiable regulation that is needed would be strengthening the Airline Security in many airports and on many airplanes. Stricter airline security and strengthening the cockpit can prevent damages to the passengers, the crew, and many other people that may not be flying is an example of one of the acceptable regulations. This law is need because it protects many innocent citizens from terrorists on the airplanes and the pilots from attack. By strengthening the security, many people will feel a lot safer because they know that anyone that is carrying a weapon will not be able to get on the plane. If we strengthen the cockpit, the pilots will be able to do their job and keep the plane flying safely. The terrorists are not able to penetrate the cockpit and get to the pilots and take over the airplane. The airline workers such as stewardesses and pilots should be able to carry some kind of weapon to protect themselves from terrorists that try to attack them.
Another example of legitimate regulation is law enforcement. Law enforcement is one of the state’s regulations, but they do operate under certain rules and guidelines that the government develops. Law enforcement is a valuable asset to the government. They are able to protect citizen as well as the representatives for the government. Law enforcement is needed because terrorists, within and from other countries, can harm many inhabitants of the United States if they are not there to protect them.
A final and third example of valid government regulation is the speed limits. By enforcing the speed limits many people will not be harmed by crazy drivers speeding or racing down the highways. Speed limits are a very justifiable law that must be obeyed thoroughly. Because without speed limits people are prone to get into very many accidents that may cost them lots of money, cause harmful affects, or even death to the person or persons riding in that vehicle or other vehicle traveling the highway.
The burden of filling out federal paperwork is an unnecessary bill because it makes Congress fill out hours of paperwork. Since the law was passed many more hours were spent on filling out pointless pages of paperwork. Another example an illegitimate law is the anti-fun law. The government has passed a law that prohibits young children from playing basketball, hopscotch, soccer, baseball, or even roller-blading on the streets. So what are the children supposed to do if they are not allowed to have fun? If children are not allowed to play, they usually resort to crime. One more instance of an unnecessary law is some branches of the EPA. Sometimes, they go in and order the private landowners around telling them to do what they want instead of what the landowner wants. This is not justifiable because they do not have the right to go in on private property and tell people what to do.
The regulations are enforced by money. New risks come up when a new regulation comes into play to fix a problem. For example, AT&T funded cell phone regulations because they can be used to save lives or assist a person in distress. Major regulations that contain more than $100 million dollars must go through a series of evaluations. Some corporate donors to the Harvard center are Merck & Co., Inc., Exxon Mobil Corp., Bethlehem Steel Corp. and the Shell Foundation. These corporations also donate their money to many organizations that are out there to save wildlife, nature, and so on.
The Congress should decide by having a meeting about experiments and decision planning and then meet later on to come to a concluding decision. Congress can reverse decisions made or they can develop new regulations. The Congress holds all the power. They can decide who gets to do what and how they should do it, or they are able to decide how much money should be paid for their regulations and so on. They can block regulations, open rules, and apply enforcement.
There is too much government regulation because there are so many bills and laws that many people do not know about until they are confronted with the consequences. The government develops many silly unneeded laws that do not apply to people, limits their freedoms as Americans, or costs them even more money. Government regulations is needed, but not to the point where it seems like a person is not able to breathe without the law being there to restrain them. Sometimes the government helps certain people out, but is it fair to others that are not getting it who do need it. The government is at times cruel and harsh to people that do not do what they order them to. But at other times they seem lax with what other people do just because they have the money to get them out of trouble. Some government officials are prejudice to certain people and they do nothing for them, but they do everything they can for the people they like. The government should pass bills and laws that apply to all people, not just some, and enforce them. The laws should be absolutely necessary.
