(Some student is sure to have a copy at home if it can’t be found in the school or local public library.) Thidwick should be read aloud and discussed in all participating classrooms.
Questions
Teachers should click on this link to print the Questions. Copies should be made for every 4th, 5th and 6th grade student participating in contest B. Fifth and sixth grade students should answer the questions individually. Grades 1-3 should answer the same questions only collaborating as a class.
Contest A
A class, to qualify for awards, must consist of between ten and thirty students. The teacher should submit the collective answers to the Harry Singer Foundation via email. staff@singerfoundation.org
Fourth grade teachers may
choose to participate in either contest A or B.
Three books will be awarded to every
class participating in contest A. The books will be chosen from a list
suitable for this age
group. In addition, the teacher will choose a book from either the Education
list or the Teachers list. Should you have trouble with the
preceding links, the
lists can also be reached from Main Menu and clicking on the Resources
link there.
Awards per class = 4 books total.
Contest B
A class, to qualify for awards, must consist of between ten and thirty students.
Each student must write an
essay of no less than 450 words and no more than 700 words. Essays must be
checked by the teacher for grammatical and spelling errors and corrected by
students before submittal to the Foundation.
No essay will be accepted unless accompanied by a thoughtful answer to every
question. Submit via email to staff@singerfoundation.org
1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates will be awarded as well as certificates of participation. All essays and answers to questions will be published online. Entries, upon submittal, become the property of The Harry Singer Foundation.
Three prizes will be awarded to individual students in every class that submits a minimum of ten qualifying essays. The teacher can decide whether the books or for the classroom, school library or for the authors of the winning papers.
1st prize = 3 books 2nd prize = 2 books 3rd prize = 1 book
In
all, six books suitable for students and one for the teacher will be awarded = a
total of seven books.
Each winner will choose from a
list of available books. The prizes will be chosen from these selections.
We expect the books to go to the authors of the essays selected by the
Foundation but the teacher has the option of specifying that the books be
awarded to the school or classroom library instead.
Both Contests
All prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the Singer Foundation.
Submittals may be emailed anytime before December 2003.
