Life Lessons

The most wonderful sport I could ever choose to play is volleyball.  I have devoted my life to this sport; this decision I have made on my own.  My life has consisted of playing volleyball nearly all year around since I was a young child.  Intense practices aide in many performances and teach me various skills, not only on the volleyball court, but in the form of life lessons as well.  I have also learned that winning is not everything.  Although the game of volleyball is very competitive and the goal is to win, the real lesson is learning how to function without winning.

A real volleyball player puts forth one hundred and ten percent—even if her team loses the match, she must be satisfied with the hard work that she has put forth.  Adolf Hitler once said, "The one means that wins the easiest victory over reason:  terror/and force."  Hitler did not live in a democracy; he did not have a free choice in any matter of his life.  I believe that living in a democracy has led me to a free life; a life that many individuals never have a chance to experience.  Hitler took the rights and choices of others into his own hands.  He decided that there should only be one race with the same religion and any person of a different ethnic background should be put to death.  Instead of using mind over reason, Hitler resorted to using force over terror.  Obviously, he never played on my team of freedom.  The world we live in is in a constant state of war.

Like Hitler, Osama bin Laden took our peace on September 11, 2001.  He has led American people to live with a fear that is never ending.  By taking American lives into his own hands, he has created a war not only with the people of America, but with the people who were affected worldwide.  September eleventh is a day that will remain in American minds forever.  The numerous wars that go on today will not compare to what Osama bin Laden has created.  I believe that he has become a monster that will not seem to go away.  The war that he has produced should have been prevented at all costs.  Again, Osama bin Laden is using terror over force.  He represents Hitler in the fact that he is shaping a war that should not be aroused.

Arnold Toynbee once said, “History teaches us that when a barbarian race confronts a sleeping culture, the barbarian always wins.”  I think that Toynbee is expressing his perspective about the way he feels religiously.  He was a man that was criticized for using myths and metaphors by comparing them to actual events in history.   Being a Christian man, Toynbee relied heavily on his knowledge of the Bible.  The war that he is trying to display is the war between people not only of a different race but also of a different culture.  Toynbee presents the fact that not all Americans think alike.  Those thoughts are what cause war and power to trigger.

Also, being an American allows individuals to have various beliefs.  As America has risen to the occasion to defend their country with anger and despair, we have also displayed many effects of war and peace.  During the time of the Civil War, people have learned that although America is supposed to be a peaceful place, we do have the ability to fight.  History teaches us that when people do not pay attention to what is happening around them, they may be alarmed at the change that is taking place and react poorly.  People at the time of the Civil War realized that people of different ethnic backgrounds were coming together and uniting.  This put the dominant culture in distress that their power may be taken away and the end result is war.  Although blacks and cultures of different minorities are not treated equal in every instance, day by day the development of a free and equal society is the outlook many individuals of other cultures have.

It is now my chance to prove to everyone that I can survive the challenge of serving game point.  The game is on the line, and as I begin to quiver, the ball slowly leaves the palm of my hand.  The toss is perfectly placed; the palm of my hand smacks the back of the ball, but I realize I have hit the ball too low.  The ball sling shots into the bottom of the net.  I feel that I have let my team down, and as I trot to my position on the floor, my dad lets out a smile.  The reality of mind reasoning has kicked in.  I think that by using my mind over reason, I have already overcome many objectives.  Hitler used force and terror; he did not use reason.  Also, taking a look at my religion and what Arnold Toynbee declares, I realize how history accounts for mistakes over the control of power.  If everyone was not so worried about power of other people, war would be out of the question in almost every instance.
