Relevancy of War
By Ashleigh Swanson
12th grade

"Peace is rare: Less than 8% of the time since the beginning of recorded time has been entirely at peace.  In a total of 3,530 years, 286 have been warless.  Eight thousand treaties have been broken in this time." Unknown. It is hard to believe all of the wars the world has had and all of the treaties that have been broken throughout the span of history.  There is so much hate that has been plaguing our world since the beginning of time and so much hate that still goes on.  Why donšt people put more energy into helping our planet rather that destroying it?

During this time of war, I think about what my ancestors have gone through and tried to accomplish to make the world a better place for everyone.  When our fore fathers wrote the constitution, they were trying to lay down some rules and guidelines that would make everyone equal therefore; no discrimination.  With all of the racism and discrimination that goes on, it is not a shock that people are always fighting.  Until the end of time people will be trying to make peace and until the end of time there will be fighting.

People are so intelligent, but so dumb when it comes to war.  "The thing that makes life so cruel is that everyone has such good reasons." Unknown. It seems that whenever there is a conflict, both sides of the problem seem to have good reasons for why they are right.  Too many people are stubborn and bullheaded, which just complicates matters even more.  If people were not so ignorant and would learn to compromise, we could probably bypass some wars, which might save lives.

Albert Bernard Nobel made a good point when he stated, " My dynamite will sooner lead to peace than a thousand world conventions.  As soon as men will find that in one instant whole armies can be utterly destroyed, they surely will abide by the golden peace."  I think that he is trying to say that no matter how hard people try to make peace, no one listens unless someone uses force.  When people realize that many people can die in a matter of seconds, maybe they will want world peace.  I want peace and I will strive to make difference, no matter how small it may be.

Establishing the Nobel Prize and inventing dynamite are just two of Alfred Bernard Nobel accomplishments.  He was a Swedish chemist and engineer, living from 1833 until 1896.  Nobel had a large fortune of money but never married and had health problems most of his life.  Since his explosives and powders were military uses, Nobel became interested in keeping the peace between everyone.  He then had an idea for a peace prize, which later was expanded from his will to include four other prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature.  Thanks to Alfred Bernard Nobel we still have people striving for peace and following in his footsteps to
receive recognition and a very high honor.

After hiding from the Nazi Party and Hitler, Anne Frank stated, "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."  It is hard to believe that someone who survived all of that hatred and violence would say something so sincere.  She is right though because there are always going to be some people who donšt like others, and all we can do is try to get along with each other.  Even if someone does not like someone, they can still make an effort to be civil around that person.  If people could look past their differences and try to understand other people's cultures and heritages, we would all get along much better.

After reading all of these quotes I have learned how cruel our world is even if people do not do it intentionally.  The United Nations is one-way countries have banded together to make the world a safer and better place for everyone.  Trying to find a way to keep the peace has always been a problem and it will continue to be a problem.  We as citizens should find more ways to serve and protect our nation.  We always worry about the Middle East or what is going on in other countries, but we should also worry about what is happening in our own back yard.  After all, the only way to fix something is to start small and work our way up to something even larger.
