The three quotes that I chose talk about life and war. Since September the 11th these two words have been the topic of many conversations. I think life and war are two subjects that are many times greatly overlooked. It shouldn¹t take something like the tragedies in New York, Washington, and Philadelphia to make people stop and think about them. I think that Albert Einstein, Ben Herbster, and an anonymous author, do a great job expressing this.
Albert Einstein once said, "I don¹t know what kind of weapons will be used in the third world war, assuming there will be a third world war. But I can tell you what the fourth world war will be fought with stone clubs." I think when saying this, Einstein implied that the third world war would be the end of civilization as we know it today.
Being at war right now makes people think about how true his statement could be. By the end of a third world war, there could be nothing left. With all the advanced war technologies there are today, our nation could be destroyed, as well as other countries around the world. Counties all over the world would have to start over.
Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. While growing up he showed no early signs of the intelligence he is known for today. Although he may not have been the best student, he was drawn to the studies of science and mathematics. Einstein was so fascinated by these subjects that he studied them on his own. Einstein became a high school dropout when he left to join his family in Milan. He was taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. After graduating Einstein got a job being a patent examiner. From there on he began to make all kinds of scientific discoveries, one of them being the equation E=mc2. Einstein said that he was more of a philosopher than a scientist. Einstein died in New Jersey in 1955.
"The greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we are and what we could become." This quote by Ben Herbster is probably my favorite of the three. He¹s saying that many people have all the potential in the world but never realize it and let their talents go unknown for the rest of their lives. In order to make progress in life, we need to take risks and never give up on our dreams. I think this quote is a lot like what Garth Brooks sings about in his song, "Standing Outside the Fire." In this song Brooks sings the following, "Life is not tried, it is merely survived, if you¹re standing outside the fire." I think Herbster and Brooks are both right; people should live their lives to the fullest and not be scared to try new things.
Ben Herbster was a famous doctor, reverend, leader, and philanthropist. Herbster was the founding president of the United Church of Christ. He was also a highly respected trustee for the United Church Homes. Other accomplishments include founding the "100+ club" program for annual support, being chairperson for several renovation expansions, and capital campaigns for the United Church Homes¹ communities. Ben Herbster¹s volunteering, professional leadership, service to the elderly, and charitable support have helped the United Church Homes to expand and provide service to 3,000 elderly people each year. There is now a Ben M. Herbster Award given to individuals in United Church Homes¹ communities to those whose character is like that of Dr. Ben Herbster.
Albert Einstein and Ben Herbster were both leaders in their own way. Einstein had many scientific discoveries that help people all over the world every day. While Herbster¹s accomplishments may not be as famous, I think they are equally great. Their quotes on war and life seem to be very true and extremely understandable since the attack on America. I think people need to realize how precious life is and take advantage of all the wonderful experience¹s life brings them. We need to be smart enough to say no to war when it can be avoided.
