The following quote is from the theater piece Lion in Winter:
"We are the origins of war. Not the history's forces nor the times
not justice nor lack of it, nor causes, nor religion, nor ideas, kinds of
government nor any other thing we are the killers. We breed wars.
We carry it like syphilis inside dead bodies, rotting field and stream.
Because the living ones are rotten. Oh God canıt we love one
another just a little. Thatıs how peace begins. We have so much to love
each other for. We have such possibilities. We could change the
world."
To me this quote is saying that we as individuals help predict and cause
what the future will bring. We humans could help to prevent war, if only
we could all get along. I believe that we can change the world, that every
single one of us can make a big difference. I agree that it is the way
humans act or re-act that makes/causes war. It really isnıt the forces,
times, government, ideas, or religion, but us. We decide how to react and
by us overreacting then all chaos breaks out. I agree that we should all
love one another, just a little. What have we got to lose from loving each
other? Not much, but we have so much to gain. I agree that there is
so much to love each other for. That the possibilities to help change the
world and our lives lies in our hands. We can all help to change what
happens, even if it only means to talk to that one person who is by him or
herself. Say hi, what can it hurt?
Help by cleaning the filth from our planet; all it takes is one willing
person at a time who cares and can persuade another to do whatıs right. All
we need to do is care for one another and believe in the next generations, not
turn our backs on each other. I donıt see why people think they are
better or higher than others. We are all the same. We all breath
oxygen to live, donıt we? Why does what is on the outside have to matter
so much? If people would get off their " high horses," we could
accomplish so much more. We have all the possibilities, whether we believe
it or not. It is what is inside that really matters. How we treat
others and how we react to others matters. People are watching how others
react and they pick up on it with out us even knowing. If we all just tried to
make the world a positive place and watch out for our negative attitudes, then
we would be able to accomplish greatness. Havenıt we all heard the saying
"treat others how you want to be treated?"
"We must have military power to keep madmen from taking over the
world." Billy Graham the author of this quote was born in 1918.
In 1940 he was appointed a minister during a special ceremony. Billy
is known as a world famous evangelist. He has gone around the world
conducting evangelistic campaigns. He has written books to explain his
feelings and views on religion. Ben Herbster was also religious. He
was a founding president of the United Church of Christ. He was a great
leader and his philosophies were strongly believed.
To me the above quote means that it would be great to not have to have the
military powers: Navy, Army, National Guard, Marines, etc but we canıt. We
have to have them. Even if we tried, someone, somewhere, would still have
the military or begin to create their own. Then they would start making
bombs and rifles. This in itself causes war. Think of todayıs
crisis. Where would we be without our military power? Would Bin
Laden have taken over the United States? The military does so much and is
almost taken for granted. What would have happened during WWII if Hitler
were the only person who had a military? We probably wouldnıt be here and
Hitler would be running the world. I agree with the author. There
are way too many crazy people everywhere to not have military powers to prevent
them from taking over the world. We could try to cut down or not have
bombs and rifles, but someone will see that all their bombs and rifles are not
destroyed, and not every military power will be put to an end. There will
be people out there who want to take over the world. They will create
their own armies and pay to make their own bombs and rifles. Or they will
get something else that will help them take over the world.
"The greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we
are and what we could become." We all have so many hidden talents
that it is insane. We all just settle for the way it is, and let it go --
someone else will fix the problem. We all feel that we donıt need to
help, but we do need to help. We all need to realize that there is more to
us, and we can act out and help many people if only we tried. Why does it
always seem that something bad, really bad, has to happen before something good
gets done? Why do we think the problems will just go away, why donıt we
fix them instead? Do we not see them, or do we think if we turn our backs,
they will just go away? Take the tragedy of September 11 for intense: four
planes were high jacked from different U.S. airports. Arenıt airports
supposed to be safe, with high amounts of security? Well, then why and how
did four planes get high jacked? If our airports had higher security and
more attentive people working for them, then this should not have happened.
Why did so many have to die for airports to crack down on their security.
We should have already had it. I agree that we all could help, but
instead we take it for granted.
