The Ideal Society

By: Andrew McLaughlin

12th Grade

What is an ideal society?  Everyone has their own opinion on what their ideal society would be like.  John lives in a big city where there are many laws and people everywhere.  He is living in a society that he does not like.  He lives in a neighborhood with trashy houses, high taxes, factories surrounding everything.  Kids are running around without supervision, young teens are becoming pregnant and wanting to abort their babies because they cannot support them.  Drugs are taking over lives of kids as well as parents.  Parents are getting divorced for cheating on their spouses.  Elderly people are dying right and left because Medicare is not supporting them in nursing homes.  This kind of society does not satisfy many people, but a lot of people live in it, and there isn’t much a person can do about it.

I live in a society, for the most part, I enjoy.  I live a small town community where I know everyone and everyone typically knows me.  This is a good deal because I am known as Andrew and not Bill and Kathy McLaughlin’s son.  Another reason why I like living in a small community is because people in the community know me for my accomplishments, hard work, and my good doing.  I am also in a combined school district with two small communities joined together to achieve many goals.  In our high school there are about one hundred sixty kids.  Everyone knows each other by first and last name, dates of birth, where they live, parents, and most even know who their third cousins are.  Kids are called by names, not numbers.  This is part of my ideal society.  I want to be known for who I am, not by a number or someone’s kid.  I enjoy knowing everyone in my community and about their family history.  Too many people don’t know anybody besides their close friends, and then when they get out in the real world, they are lost because they do not have someone to rely on.

Besides the likable small town society I live in, the big society that all of us live in is hard to be happy with.  There isn’t really a way to change things to satisfy the small towns, but we can voice what we feel we would like to have.  One of my big deals that I am upset about is abortion.  I am a Catholic, and we do not believe that is right.  If people are going to have a child, then they should raise the baby, and not take an unwanted life.  Who knows, those babies who were aborted could have grown up and have been the doctor to cure cancer or the President.  No one will ever know.  We take for granted what people are capable of doing because they all think it is fine and dandy to abort someone because they aren’t able to support their child that they produced as an accident.  Well, I disagree, I feel is it a form of cruelty and banishment of mankind for unknown reasons that I do not believe in.  This is my biggest issue since it is against my religion, and I do not believe in taking lives of anyone or anything for obscene reasons.

Another society issue that needs to be changed to make my ideal society is war.  I realize we had to do something to fight back and stand up for our country, but I think there were options to be worked out.  I also have a feeling we had it coming to us, just by what we knew that was going on across seas and never took it into our hands to prevent it.  I think we didn’t have to go over to Iraq and start eliminating people.  While we have been over there, we have done a lot of good, but we have also had many casualties for the United States, and that is not what we want.  Eventually at the rate we are going through lives, the draft is going to be popping up anytime soon.  I am at the age where I could be drafted to be sent over to fight.  I would be proud to serve my country that I live in, but not for a war that I believe could have been prevented. If there was never a war, it would make my society a whole lot better than what it is now.

Our society is never going to satisfy everyone because we all have different beliefs, but we are able to give our opinion on what our ideal society would be like.  I have touched on a few of my society issues that could be changed to satisfy me, as well as many other people I know.  I agree, we all have different view points than others because God made us all different just to get along, but God would not agree with the points that I touched on above.  My ideal society would be without abortion, war, crime, drugs, and poverty, and have more humanity.  It would have happiness, perfection, and togetherness between people.
