The Neglectful Habits Of People

By Jon Ohrtman

12th Grade

Why even work when there is always some one else that can do the work for you?  This is a belief of many people now days.  If there is someone else out there that can do the work, why not let them do it?  This is the problem with today’s society.  People feel they don’t have do anything because some one else will always pick up the slack.  No one even seems to care about the pride that comes with a job well done.  People are too lazy anymore and only care about themselves.  Thus it can be said that people are more neglectful now than ever, and there is something that should be done about it.

Where have all the good hard working people gone?  It is still true that there are hard working people in the world, but many have become lazy in their everyday pursuits.  This is especially true when it comes to community work, housework, and regular jobs.  These neglectful habits have become a part of everyday life.  People just skate by on what little they do in hopes that someone else will pick up the slack, and this isn’t a good respectable way to do things.  Not only is it not respectful, but it’s not good for the whole world, because when no one does anything to help manage the world, it will become a waste land.  People need to get off their lazy behinds and make contributions to this country as well as this whole world because with more help, everything could be better from government to a cleaner environment.

Community is probably the most neglected of all things.  Generally in a community there are people that tend to take charge and carry out task, and then there are those that never even get involved.  That isn’t even the worst part that they aren’t involved in community functions, but they don’t take any responsibility to do anything for the community.  One good example of something to do to help the community would be to help clean up litter or help out with the animal shelters.  These are simple things that could be done, but aren’t.  Granted there are still people in the community that pick up the slack of others, but if everyone worked, it would be a much better place.  When the few people that do care stop caring or can’t do it anymore, who will pick up the slack?

The house is often a major place of neglect among families.  Too many times family members won’t do the work because they feel it’s the responsibility of someone else.  This could be true to an extent if there were designated house chores, but when there isn’t it’s just a sign of laziness.  Too often it is put on the mother or the children to do all the housework.  Everything would get done faster and work easier if people just worked together to get the work done.  Sometimes some freedoms have to be taken away to make sure stuff gets done, and maybe this could be applied in other situations where people neglect responsibility.

Probably one of the last but definitely not the least is when people chose not to work and live off the government.  This causes so many problems for everyone.  This is a true example where the laziness of some has hurt so many.  The government is forced to raise taxes in order to serve the needy.  Granted some people do need government assistance, but some are just plain lazy and no good for anything.   Why should other people have to suffer because some people are just lazy?  This has always been a problem, but now it’s becoming even more of a problem because it’s really affecting the people.  It could even be said that if the government wasn’t spending so much money on these useless individuals, there could be more money for social security.

With the evidence brought fourth, it can be seen that people now days are just lazy and don’t care.  This could be a major problem in the future because when the ones that do try lose their money or just stop trying to support others, this country will be in a world of hurt.  People seem to neglect everything from house chores to working full time jobs.  This might not seem like a big deal to everyone, but it really is.  If nothing is done about this, things will not be good for anyone.

Answers To Questions Prompted By The Required Reading

1.    Why does Machan use “steal” in his statement: “Private property solves this problem, but was abandoned a long time ago when taxes reached the point where we can steal our way to being provided with all sorts of things we desire, never mind thinking about paying for them or long-ranged budgeting.”?

Machan uses the word steal, because with government funding people can get whatever they want. They abandon private property because of taxes and thus in return the government loses funding and goes broke. People go through life just depending on government to provide for them, which shouldn't be provided.

2.    Machan said: “For that which is common to the greatest number has the least care bestowed upon it.” Give two examples of this from your personal experience.

Two examples could be public playgrounds, and parks. People don't always seem to respect these two things. They think that it's not actually theirs, so they don't respect it. They think it's other people’s responsibility to do this, but then everyone thinks this and nothing gets done.

     3.  Do you agree with Machan that “... everybody is more inclined to       neglect the duty which he expects another to fulfill; as in families many attendants are often less useful than a few.”? Give an objective example of this.

I agree, because if someone believes it is someone else's job to do something then they wont do it. Also it's the same for everyone else in the house, it they believe you will do it then they wont. In a family this is especially true when it comes to doing dishes or laundry. It is always assumed that someone else will do it and it doesn't get done.

      4. State Kershner's First Law. Do you agree or disagree and why?

“When a self governing people confer upon their government the power to take from some and give to others, the process will not stop until the last bone of the last tax payer is picked bare.” I don't agree, because we draw limits to the amounts of money the government can take. One way to do this is by way of election. If a president wants to keep any type of popularity then he wont tax the people unforgiving.

5.     What industry was the first to be taken over by government in both ancient Rome and the USA?

Transportation and shipping were the first two industries taken over.

6.     Is cheapened money the cause or outcome of inflation? Explain.

Cheapened money is the cause of inflation, because with more money being circulated, the prices will skyrocket. Thus causing inflation.

      7. How did the Edict of 301 affect Rome's economy?

It helped kill the economy, because so many had died by this law. The law was made with good intentions to help get Rome stable again, but didn't work. After much bloodshed people stopped bringing their products to market, because they couldn't get a fair price.

8.     Lee claims that individuals could be “entirely independent of others” except for what? Explain

We live in a world of scarcity, so we are forced to interact with others. With interaction comes the need for social codes of conduct the limit us even further.

      9. Describe the dilemma concerning rules as discussed by Lee.

If we had no rules we would be totally free, but then with that we may lose our freedom of independence. If one man is stronger than other he can force them to do what ever he wanted. He can make them his slave and no one can tell him what to do.

10.  Why is the concept of private property crucial to freedom?

Because if you don't own anything and it can be confiscated from you, then there is no will to work or do anything. If you own your own property then you have more of a will to work, thus the things that make society move will get done.

11.  Argue both pro and con that in his testimony Lawrence Reed was      advocating compassion and air for the poor. If a family is actually working to get money and trying to make a living, I don't see any harm in a little government aid. They are doing all they can and with some jobs now days that’s just not good enough. On the other hand when you have people that don't work, or barely work they shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt and get tons of government aid. They don't deserve it.

12.  If people are free, they will not earn equal incomes; conversely, show me a people who have equal incomes and I will show you a people who are not free.” Explain in your own works Mr. Reed's meaning.

In the free world jobs are not equal and so pay isn't equal. By making all jobs equal, that takes away our freedoms. Also some people work harder than others, so people should be able to make out of their lives what they want. If they want to be a loser, then go ahead don't get a job and work like everyone else.
