American National Red Cross

The American Red Cross was established by Clara Barton in 1881 and was granted a congressional charter in 1900. It is best known for its response to disasters. One of its goals is to help people prepare for and avoid disasters. Catholic Relief Services

Direct Relief International

This organization has had three names since it started in 1948 when it was known as the William Zimdin Foundation. In 1957 it changed its name to the Direct Relief Foundation and adopted its current name in 1982. The organization manages volunteers who teach personnel in foreign countries how to provide medical care. International Rescue Committee

Albert Einstein was a force behind the founding of this group in 1933 to assist people attempting to escape the Hitler regime. Food for the Hungry, Inc.

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, Inc.

Care USA


This organization was established in 1945 to deliver food packages to Europe at the end of the second world war. Today the emphasis is on helping the poor of the lesser developed nations in the world. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

This group was began in 1978 in order to provide a national voice for battered women. United Jewish Appeal

Founded in 1940 to raise funds to assist settlers immigrat- ing to Israel.
