Partially Funded Rewards
Large rewards which are offered for an exchange of many hours are listed here. The challenge is usually taken up by a variety of volunteers over time. This section let's the community note progress. When the expiration date nears, I envision a flashing notice on AW's home page alerting people that so many hours have already been expended and not to let the offer expire without full acceptance. (Look at the auction sites.) It is a cyber rallying cry to the community.
WL14 = Gym for 16th Street Boys & Girls Club

Needed total of 6,000 hours
Thank you for 4,073 hours
As of 1/19/99 we still need 1,927 hours
The four lines above might be all that appears on the list of partially funded rewards. By activating the link a user would find more details.
But suppose instead opportunities were broken down:
WL14 roofing supplies for the 16th Street Boys & Girls
Club gym
WL15 skilled roofers for the 16th Street Boys & Girls Club gym
That's taking just the roof and dividing into two wishes. You can
see there would be a dozen WLs to get the gym.
Or how about this?

WL14 composite shingles for roof 16th Street Boys &
Girls Club gym
Need 10,000 shingles
Thank you for 2,700 shingles
As of 1/19/99 need 7,300 shingles one volunteer hour = 100 shingles
The point is to get as many people involved and able to pinpoint the impact their contribution is having on a project.
Risk

The renovation of the gym might be estimated at $30,000. Half is labor cost and roughly
half is roofing materials, equipment rentals and supplies. WL14 could be fully funded by
one grant maker, but let's assume to date only $12,000 has been funneled through the
database: $1,000 by the Friends of Jefferson School, $1,000 by the Police Explorers,
$5,000 by Youth Services, $3,000 by Apple Computer Inc., and (5) $2,000 by the local
United Way.
Partially funded rewards put the risk on community volunteers. It
is possible that more reward hours will be earned than will be funded for WL14. Suppose
volunteers have contributed 1,673 hours that have not yet been funded and they intend to
get the 1,927 additional hours needed to make the dream come true. The Harry Singer
Foundation could probably guarantee that wouldn't happen, but even so the worst that could
happen is the project might not go ahead as anticipated and reward hours would be
transferred, by the volunteers that earned them, to other projects.
