IMPROVING CITIZENSHIP IN GRADES K – 12

The Harry Singer Foundation has offered a nationwide essay contest since 1988 which exposes participants to subjects of current national interest. Bound books were published featuring excerpts from the essays we received. These books were distributed, free of charge, to schools and elected officials for the first dozen years. Since 2001 the essays have been published in their entirety on line. Prizes have been offered as incentives and recognition. In addition, all entrants receive certificates from the Foundation.
We invite you to browse essays from the finalists in the 1994-95 contest Proposals For Local Governments Struggling With Limited Resources which was judged by some members of the U.S. Congress as well as a few governors and mayors.
We
are
ready
to
provide
projects for students in elementary and
middle school and
will
do
so
if
we
receive
enough
interest
from
classroom
teachers. We
also hope to attract college
students to participate in a program to correct public policy misconceptions in
some essays submitted by younger students in the past.
In
the
21st
century
we,
students
and
adults,
need
to
understand
that
we
are
World
citizens
as
well
as
citizens
of
the
United
States.
In
2006
we
recruited
several
accomplished
adult
volunteers
who
will
conduct
outreach
programs
that
will
allow
American
students
to
collaborate
on
projects
with
students
in
other
countries.
