What Is Community Based
Learning?
Community based
learning is changing the way teachers teach and students learn. It was initiated
by educators who recognized the difference between theory and talking to real
people and seeing the effect of social policy as it plays out in life. These
educators believe students should be spending more time solving problems that
have relevance to daily life. They reason that learning is supposed to make a
difference in a student’s life and in the world. Community-based learning is the
bridge between the intellectual classroom and real life. It's not so much what
is learned in textbooks, as what is done with the theories outside the
classroom.
