What is a safe and happy American community? It would be on where people could Feel safe walking down the street alone, feel safe at home during the night, where people would not have to lock every door when they  are not home. There are not many communities like  that any more. The society today has deteriorated. People are not in touch with what is going on around them. They don’t care what happens everywhere else, but they should. Because whether they realize it or not, the decline in society and in morals will greatly effect everyone as a hole. People can start to make a difference in there community. They have to take responsibility. They should be responsible for themselves, responsible to their family, and responsible to their community.

First, a person should be responsible as a individual. People must be willing to admit and correct their own faults before they can help others. There are ways to improve and help their community. First a person could improve their morals. A moral is defined as being capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. Everyone is born with this ability. If adults would strongly act on what they believe is right and wrong, they would pass it on younger generations. Now there are few things a person can hear about and actually be shocked about. The people of today are numb to death unless it affects them directly. Which means the morals of society have declined. After a person has decided what their morals, are they should be strong on their decisions. Most people are passive on what go on around them and even in their own home. After they decide what their morals are, they will fell better about themselves, then they can improve in the work place. A person must be responsible to his job also. Planning early for a job is a very important part of getting a job that their can be happy in. The planning starts in high school for most people. It is important to get a job that is enjoyable. When that happens, they will not wake up dreading to go to work or come home in a bad mood.  Whatever the job is, the person must work hard, be on time and work together as a team for it to last and be successful.

The next way a person can make a difference in society is to be  responsible to their family.  Having a family is a very big responsibility.  Pat Wingert says, “Getting married used to be a prerequisite for the most important decisions of life: having sex, living together, and making babies, china, but a dog, even conceive a child with out bothering with legalities.”  Divorce is a increasing trend that tear families and people apart.  When two people are married it should be for life.  Not until they get tired of each other.  It should be taken very seriously.  The actions of immature adults are lowering family values and morals of children.  They are increasing family violence and stress on the children caught in the middle of the feuding adults.  A responsible adult should be able to spend quality time with their children.  They could set aside time to be with them more just try to be supportive of them.  Just finding time to be with a child is very special to that kid whether they show it or not. Patricia Hersch wrote, “a teacher did a survey of twenty-eight students and found that 75% of them had breakfast alone or with siblings they were responsible for, only 25% had their mom or dad available.  One fourth made dinner regularly for the family too.  This wasn’t about neglect but about schedules, changes in the fabric of growing up.”

The final way to help society is to be responsible to their community.  A community is any group hung in the same arena or having interests or work in common.  In order to live in a peaceful community people have to be willing to work together and get along.  There are many ways to get involved in helping the community.  Adults can volunteer to help children.  For example, by mentioning a child and adult could save a child from drugs and violence.  There is a lot if violence and anger is schools and in the children  today.  By mentoring a child, it could, it could set morals for them that they never got at home.

Mentoring gives so many children the chance they never got at home.  Groal writes, “one study by Public/Private Ventures shows that children who are mentored are less than half as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, while another by the Harvard Business Schools shows that corporate volunteers can boast employees’ productivity and morale.” So mentioning makes a difference in the child as well as the adult.  People could also volunteer to do other things such as being a speaker to educate kids on things like how to control their temper; gun control; safe sex and abstinence; and school and family violence.  There are many ways to help the community around you.

There are many obvious ways that society has deteriorated, socially as well as morally.  These ways can be helped.  People determine what happens to themselves.  If they are willing to work together, to improve themselves and the morals of the rest of their community.  It will make this society a better place to live in today. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wisely said, “We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools.”
