July, 2008
I was reformatting the essays from our first, and to date, only essay contest for teachers. Reading these essays again made me want to share them with you. We can all learn a great deal from the experiences and wisdom expressed in these writings.
I am grateful we have such people in our schools and am considering including an annual Teacher's Essay Contest in the Teachers Forum of the renovated web site we are currently constructing. Please let me know your thoughts after you have read a few Teacher's Essays.

Essay Contests
The essay contest valid May
through December 2007 has been
posted. Our first essay contest in 1987-88 addressed Social Security. We
didn't keep papers in those days so they will not be found in our
archives where you
will find students' work from 1989-2006. The current contest is likely to be our
last essay contest using this format.
If your teacher
doesn't have time to make this a classroom project, we will be happy to post
your ideas, as long as all the essay instructions are followed. You do not have
to be a student to enter the contests.
We have offered contests for twenty years. We published and distributed printed books from 1990 through
2000. We have been working on a new book of
excerpts taken from all the essays submitted since the last book was printed in
2000. We hope to include some from 2007 so don't wait to the end to send us your
work. Please let us know if you want to be included in the book and we will make
a special effort to include you. Although we began putting essays directly online in 2001, we still have some books from years past. You may
request copies by contacting the foundation. Telephone: 831-625-4223 *

Emotional Intelligence

We invite you
to view an essay written by a 17-year-old student.
This student did not enter our contests, but we have treasured this essay for
many years
and continue to share it. It is an inspiration to parents, grandparents and
students, offering role models for old and young alike. This essay is the result of a responsible,
loving upbringing.
Guns and Schools
We have gathered here comments sent to us
over a number of years from both students and adults regarding guns and school violence.
Unfortunately violence in general, continues to be a problem in our society and
therefore interest continues.
Polls
National and
local
press releases announcing the findings from the student Trade Proposals submitted to
the Foundation in the spring of 1997 are still available to view. A
general analysis of all the polls as well as a more
detailed analysis for each of the 34 participating schools
are posted online. If you wish, you may review even earlier polls. We invite everyone to
participate. A
1999 alternative poll is
still available to
print and distribute. In 2003 we posted the results of a
poll conducted by Omer
Kamal Aijazi who lived in Islamabad, Pakistan. Omer participated in our
2001-2002 essay contests and represented the Harry Singer Foundation at the
first International Youth Leadership Conference held in Karachi, Pakistan at the
end of June, 2004. The last we heard he was attending college in Canada.
Resources
We now have too many books
and audio tapes in our lending library. Please
tell your school librarian, local community library or any other organization to
contact us and specify the number of books they would and could welcome; we are
outgrowing our available space. Unfortunately we have not been able to find
volunteers to update the lists so request categories of interest rather than
specific titles please.
Community - Another Way
This project is looking for a community/school to set this in motion as a
pilot project. Please contact
director@singerfoundation if you are interested.
