Several prominent government officials have taken an interest in this year's essay contest and have asked that their messages be conveyed to students:

"Our history proves that one person, strengthened by conviction and guided by principle, can make a difference."
Joseph Biden, United States Senator, Chairman Judiciary Committee

"I believe the individual can indeed make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than in politics, and the young people of America can make a difference not only by understanding, but by getting involved in their government."
Dirk Kempthorne, United States Senator, formerly Mayor of Boise, Idaho

"It is important for every citizen to be involved in government as we work to get problems solved, give opportunity to people and make our nation and our world a better place."
Paul Simon, United States Senator, Illinois

Other United States Senators have written letters and have offered to judge the class proposal finalists along with the Mayor of Houston, Texas and several Governors, some who also sent messages to you as you begin this project:

"I am happy to support a program that emphasizes the best of America and all it symbolizes to us and to the rest of the world."
Governor Ann Richards of Texas

Governor Tommy Thompson, from his office in Wisconsin, sent the following quotation to inspire you:

"It is time for a new generation of leadership, to cope with new problems and new opportunities. For there is a new world to be won."
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th. President of the United States

Governor Jones of Kentucky commends you on your commitment: "Both teachers and students are to be commended for the extra time committed to this contest."
