The Harry Singer Foundation is attempting to demystify government for young people and encourage their participation in the community. Prominent public officials were a vital key to the success of our Alternatives project. Those who took the time to endorse this exercise, and to dedicate some staff time to reading and judging the five finalists, made the student participants feel important and hopefully less cynical about government.
We think these busy political leaders should be recognized by the media for doing something non-political--in most cases the students, teachers and parents were not their constituents, nor was the Harry Singer Foundation. We believe those who judged the efforts and shared the dreams of a few high school students, did so because they cared. We think, in this age of cynicism regarding politicians, that the voting booth might be a good place to recall that the leaders listed here didn't just talk about caring; they actually took time out of their busy schedules.
