Personal
Responsibility

Defined in
Websters Twenty-first Century Dictionary, responsibility means An
obligation to obligate is to bind oneself with a duty. Everyone in todays
society has personal responsibilities within their community. Being a good role model to the upcoming
generation is one example of personal responsibilities a member in a community must have.
Educating oneself and working within the community are also obligations a member of the community must have. Members of todays society have many personal
responsibilities to improve the quality of life in their communities.
Being a
good role model is one of the most important
responsibilities a person within a community can have.
Everyone is a role model, either in a good sense or a bad sense. Role models influence the communitys youth
dramatically. When a communitys youth
see a good role model, it influences them to strive for honesty and perfection in the
community. In return, when the young grow to be good role models, they too will have a
great impact on the upcoming generations and so on and so forth. Bad role models can have
very damaging effects on a community. They
influence the young to do bad things such as stealing and lying. This sometimes will pass down from generation to
generation. Teachers, athletic coaches,
parents, and most anybody in the community are role models.
Family members and relatives have the most direct influence on oneself. Most, but not all parents, teach their children to
be good individuals. Friends also have a
major impact on ones life. Ones
friends can have a good or a bad effect on someone. They
can push one to do good things or they can push one to do bad things. Pushing one to do good things is referred to as
positive peer pressure, but pushing one to do bad things is referred to as negative peer
pressure. Coaches and teachers also are good
role models. Coaches teach their athletes
discipline and self-respect. Teachers teach
their students to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. Police officers influence people to abide by the
law and maintain order in the community. Role
models have a definite impact on todays youth.
Getting
involved in the community will increase the quality of life in ones community. There are many areas in which to participate in
ones community to improve the quality of life such as senior citizen groups, youth
groups, church, education, etc. Being
positive and putting forth effort shows others you care and also provides a sense of
self-worth. Being active in ones community also makes one aware of negative
activities, which may arise, and possibly be stopped before they become a problem for the
community. A community can only achieve this
from individuals by providing services such as education, law enforcement, and good
political leaders. When these things are
provided, everyone within the community responds. People
work together with a positive attitude. A
strong community, even when one of these services fail, pulls together and resolves the
problem. That is why it is important to
remain active within the community.
Persons of
every age, within a community, play an important role. Young adults coming out of high
school are setting examples for the younger members of the community, and are also
learning life lessons from the older members of the community. Therefore, all generations should learn from and
respect one another. Respect is something
that is lacking in most communities that have a lot of problems. Being active in the community also improves the
quality of life by providing individualistic ideas. Everyone
is different from one another so life does not become boring and monotonous.
Safety is
a big issue within a community. Reporting
people and problem areas to local law enforcement improves safety. Helping to educate others with safety issues can
also improve a community. Cooperation with law enforcement and fire officials is also very
important. This sets a good example for
others within a community.
Our
environment is important and must be kept as clean as possible especially in rural areas. Rural areas have fewer people living in them and
littering can become a big problem. All
members of a community must try to follow state and federal guidelines for pollution
controls.
In summary, the obligation to improve the quality
of life within a community is to provide good role models, by avoiding negative peer
pressure and providing positive peer pressure. Everyone must help educate from generation
to generation, and remember to respect one another during the process. Everyone must cooperate with local government and
law officials and remain positive. Through
all this we must also remember our environment, which is also part of where we live, so it
is still here for the next generations to come. The
quality of life is what each individual makes of it and shares with other individuals in
the community. Everyone can improve the
quality of life with little effort by being respectful, honest, educated, and concerned.
The benefits to help improve the quality of life within a community are a sense of
personal satisfaction in knowing that helping not only oneself and family, but everyone
who lives within the community.
