School Safety
By Lindsey Sheets
Grade 10
Attending school is a very important
part of getting your education. For some students around the world, this may be a
difficult thing for them. Some students may not like their teachers, or their fellow
classmates. Others may just be lazy. Then, you have the students that are afraid to go to
school. Many schools around the United States have problems with violence. When this
problem occurs, the students are not able to go to school to get the proper education they
need to succeed in the future. As ridiculous as this may seem, fear of being harmed while
at school is a very serious subject. School violence is something that can be prevented,
if the right steps are taken. Talking about school safety is the first step.
School Safety is a good thing to have
around all of the schools. You shouldn't have to be worried about going to school every
morning. You should feel safe and secure so you will be able to concentrate on your
schoolwork. I think there are many things
that can be done to assure the students at a school that they are safe. The students,
teachers, and community can get involved to prevent school violence. If everyone would at
least do his part, you should have a safe learning environment.
The responsibility of a teacher is to
not only teach the students enrolled in their class, but to also make sure that their
students are in a safe learning environment. For instance, a teacher is in charge of those
students when they are in their classroom. Therefore, a good idea for the teachers is to
lock the door from the outside so no outside visitors can get into the classroom
uninvited. Also, the teacher can control who is let out of the classroom, and for what
reason. This may prevent students from bringing weapons into the classroom. Another good idea for the teacher is to make a
plan incase anything goes wrong. Teachers and staff can hold meetings against school
violence to make this problem known to students. They should let the students know what is
going on, and ask for suggestions on how to solve the problems. A suggestion box for
students is a good idea, so the students can state their opinion anonymously. Encourage
good behavior. Staff monitoring is a good idea between classes. Parents or even people who
are concerned can get involved and volunteer at the school. Strict school discipline may
also help the fight against school violence. If possible, offer counseling programs for
the students attending the school. This
program can also include conflict resolution.
It is not only the responsibility of
the teachers and staff to make sure the school is safe, but it is also the responsibility
of the students attending the school. The students attending the school play a very big
part in school safety. Students should respect others when it comes to school. School is
not a place for violence or hatred, but for learning and getting your education. Students should do everything in his or her power
to make sure that they are not endangering the other students. Sometimes students need to
think twice before they act. Students should go to the School Counselor when they have any
kind of problem. They should be an example to one another. If a student is unhappy with
school, or another student, or even a teacher, he should seek help immediately before the
problem becomes worse. We don't need violence in our schools. All students should take
part in fighting school violence. Every
little effort makes a difference.
School violence is a very big problem
in the United States today, but by teamwork with the teachers/staff, the students, and the
community, we can make safer schools for a better learning environment. Making the problem
known, and sharing the ideas and thoughts, can make a difference in every school.
Concerned people of the community can take action and volunteer at the school. They can
support school sports, and teams. By doing this, they can serve as a chaperone, or monitor
to make the students feel safe.
I am very proud to say that I feel
safe in my school. I am very thankful that I can attend a school that doesn't really have
to worry much about school violence. And I am also proud to say that my school is prepared
for anything that could happen. I hope that all schools can soon be safe so that no one
has to be afraid anymore.
