Improving the Quality of Life in Our Communities Today

By Amanda Clites

Junior English Class

While delving into the subject of improving the qualities of life in our communities today, I have discovered that through hard work and time, we can make anything possible. I think the main key is to start with the children, who will become the future of our community.  By setting up clubs, mentors, and extracurricular activities, we can hope to improve the lives of many children, also increasing the chance of a better community in our near future.

With the addition of clubs in our community, the children would have somewhere to go after school and on weekends to stay out of trouble. They would be supervised by mentors in these clubs to guide the children to do the right things in certain situations. This would teach them respect for  teachers, elders, peers, parents, and most of all, themselves. The mentors could schedule days where they would meet in a certain place to discuss daily activities in their community. Then, if anything needed worked on in their town, they could be the first group to get the job started.  This would be a lot of hard work, but I think children may need to experience difficult situations throughout their lives.

Also, if these mentors could encourage the children to get involved with extra curricular activities at their school, they would, again, stay out of trouble. This would make them stronger people by earning respect from their teammates, coaches, referees, and opponents. I am involved in volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring, so I know from experience that with involvement in these sports allows absolutely no time to misbehave. It’s a lot of hard work to keep up with all the homework because of the practices and games, but in the end, it is all worth it.  There are so many memories being made right now that these are the best times of our lives.

Sports are a good source of exercise.  During basketball season the children will have to run laps, sprints, and jump rope. This will build endurance, muscles, aggressiveness, agility, and speed.  This is all to help them in their future and with themselves.  Who knows, they may even turn into a professional player.

While working with these children, the mentors need to teach manners, respect, and discipline, but they need to have fun with it. This is not just another school they are going to attend; however, it is an all around fun place to be for children to learn new and important things. Hopefully, when the children have families of their own, they will remember everything that was taught to them and, in turn, teach it to their children.

There is always the possibility of a natural disaster striking a local community, so if our communities’ club or group of children could pull together enough, they could help to bring the community back to its normal appearance. It’s as simple as even cleaning out a basement if it has been flooded or helping someone rebuild their house. All it takes is the teaching of hard work and discipline to these children, who will then react in ways their parents never would have imagined.

Children need guidance when they are young, and they believe anything someone may tell them.  So, if someone is lying to them or mistreating them, please try to help them or make sure they understand what is right and wrong. By having mentors as leaders in their lives, they will be better off in today’s society. These leaders would bring the children strength, courage, discipline, and respect, which is needed at that time of their lives.

Some children’s parents may be divorced, which causes misbehavior.  The mentors would be there to comfort them in their times of sorrow, teach them how to let things go and move on, and last to forget about it and have fun!! The children need someone to be there role models, and if their parents aren’t always there, the mentors would be there to help.

These are my ideas and thoughts on improving the qualities of life in our communities today. Also, if anyone is interested in helping our community or others, I think these suggestions would be of much help. The children are the future; therefore, if we begin there by bettering their childhood, when they become adults, they will in turn make their community a better place for themselves and the rest of the society.

Thanks for the time and consideration. It is greatly appreciated. Hopefully, some of the ideas that have been brought to you from over the country have made an impact enough to help change our communities in some shape or form. I’m sure a majority of the society today would be thankful that people are interested enough to ask us to give ideas and suggestions on the bettering of their communities.  I know, for a fact, that I appreciate it tremendously.
