Improving The Quality Of Life In Our Community

by David Johnson
Grade 10

Do you have a wish to improve the quality of life in your community.  That is a goal that many people would like to make a reality.  Improving the community helps everyone, not just the people that are doing it.

I think that trying to fine the gun makers for a shooting that was committed by one of the guns that they produced is just a waste of time and effort.  The gun maker is not at fault for producing a gun that killed someone.  The gun can't just decide for itself that it is going to go out and kill a person, there needs to be another person to load the gun, aim it, and then fire the gun.  It may be to easy to obtain the guns today , but that is besides the point.

It is also a stupid idea how people blame the violent actions of other people on video games.  I have several of the games that are rated R, that means that there is artificial blood and sex in the contents of the game.  I haven't ever thought of them as advice givers.  I don't have any problem with access to firearms eighteen.  I own several high power rifles, and a shotgun.

The people who manufacture the gun do not live with those who purchase them, and cannot tell them that it is wrong to believe the actions of video games.  Where are the parents of the shooters at when they are planning there little assassination attempt?  Days before the shooting in Littleton, neighbors of the shooters noticed power tools being used in the basement of their house.  Every time I use a drill or any other power tool, one of my parents ask me what I am doing and why.  Why didn't the parent ask them what they were doing, and why they were doing it?

Were are in the day and age where you can buy a magazine and order a gun out of it. All you need to have is a mailing address.  I agree that getting a gun should be more difficult than that, but there is still the fact there needs to be a person behind the gun to commit the crime.

Another way to increase the quality of life in America would be to restrict the leniency of the courts, on the sentencing of criminals today.  A person that gets life in prison without the possibility of parole should be executed.  If the person if found guilty, and given the death penalty, that person should be executed, either that day or the next.  People who are on death row today end up putting in appeals to get off on the conviction could stay in prison for up to 30 years.  In that time they are using the tax payers hard earned money to get an education, and they are fed three meals a day.  Instead of having convicts get education's and work out, they should be put into work camps.  Do all of the grungy disgracing work that they can't pay people to do.  And that would be only for the people who have a chance of getting out, anyone who is sure to spend the rest of there life in jail shout be executed.  With this procedure millions if not billions would be save in taxes every year.

If there was not any litter in the world people wouldn't die of pollution, or get the cancers that area associated with pollution and contamination.  Almost all of the pollution that is on the ground and in the air, is caused by the human race.  We as the main responsibility of all of the contamination, and pollution in the world, we should be the ones to take the steps into the right direction of cleaning up the environment.

All it would take would be for all of the people around the world to either recycle or dispose of the garbage properly, and reduce the emissions of factories.  If people who work at the same job and live in the same area would carpool or take the bus to reduce the amount of cars on the road, in the same perspective that would reduce the amount of exhaust that is released into the atmosphere.

            I

f the factories that produce lots of exhaust fumes, could find some way to reduce the amount of emissions that are produced, the ozone layer would hold up for longer than it is on track to do.  There are already holes forming in the ozone layer.  Nearly the entire cause of these holes is from the emissions from commercial factories, and the burning of fossil fuels.

All that there needs to be done to improve the quality of life in the United States, would be fore all of the people to use a little common sense, and help out by either carpooling, or listening to children to possibly prevent another school shooting to occur, and help save lives.

Eckersley suggests that our collective goal should be for parents and children to always keep in touch with each other.

Q4 - Write a worthy goal for your local community.

I believe that a worthy goal for my community would be to have more youth activities for after school, and during the summer.  There is a pretty bad under-age drinking problem in my community, if there were more activities to keep the youth busy they wouldn't have time to do the drinking that they do.

Q5 - Comment on the excerpts from "Tomorrow's Child."

My comments on "Tomorrow's Child" are that most peoples relationship with there mother can't just be replaced with a mass produced doll, or even remind them of her.  And I believe that all of the other races will drastically decline the number of Caucasians in the United States of America.

Q6 - How does the fact that the USA is a democracy make lawyers particularly helpful,

according to Kathleen Sullivan?  How does our diversity, wealth and size make lawyers  particularly helpful?

In the Fact that there is a democracy all people who commit a crime, has a right to representation, to help to help that person not be found guilty of the crime.  Lawyers are given that responsibility.  With the vast amount of crimes that are committed all over the world, makes lawyers a very needed person.

Q7 - Ms. Sullivan claims bad practices are changing either by regulations or punitive damages.  Which do you prefer and why?  Can you think of an alternative?

I would believe that the regulations would cost the least.  Why would a person want to work at a job that they would have to pay for the mistakes that they make.  Although the punitive damages would definitely make the person be more aware of the problems that they should try to avoid.  I believe that Regulations and punitive damages should both be used in businesses.  At this current time I can't think of a reason that an alternative needs to be found.  The lawyers get the job done, they may need to lie a couple of times, but the only thing that needs to be done is to get the job done.

Q8 - Briefly describe three ways Society would benefit from the coming retirement of baby boomers, according to the required reading.

Q9 - Evaluate the likelihood of President Clinton's anti-poverty program making a real impact. Give at least three reasons to back up your conclusions.

I don't believe that they can generate fifteen billion dollars in poor area's, without having to bring jobs into the area.  He plans on reducing the percentage of money, that the government funded organizations, have to pay.  If these people are so poor how can they get the seventy-five dollars to pay for the hundred dollars worth of merchandise.  There are already government issued food to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, that the people sell and use the money from that and the government check that they get every month to buy designer cloths.

Q10 - Name three things Truett Cathy and Tom Lewis have in common.

Truett Cathy and Tom Lewis both let there actions make a difference.  Cathy prefers to let his actions speak louder than his words.  Lewis went against the opposition of the police, to put his fishing school in an area of town that four police officers wouldn't even go into that area in one car.  He cleaned up the area, and the fishing school became very successful.  They both made advances in business after they became elderly gentleman.
