"Adrian Thomas, a drug store owner in Meyersdale,
Pennsylvania, decided to put an end to the selling of tobacco
products in his store. Adrian's employees and family members
loaded $2000 worth of tobacco from his store and took it to the
parking lot to be burned. After the burning Adrian commented, 'You
cannot put dollars and cents above good health.'"

Robin Denison Squier teaches fifth grade in an area in
Milwaukee where "children routinely sit on the floor at
night to avoid being shot." She believes in challenge and
argues that the lowering of standards harms children who need to
be stretched in order to realize their potential and attain
self-esteem. She acknowledges her inability to change the
circumstances the children encounter after school hours , but
despite the frustration that brings she continues to teach at a
needy school because she knows her concern and skill does make a
difference in the lives of these children.

"When one father of a student in Dallas, Texas found the
number of students being caught with drugs rising dramatically,
he volunteered his services as a security monitor during school
hours. It did not take the children long to realize that he was
serious. After a few weeks, the number of offenses in the school
dropped dramatically."

"Zachary Fisher, an 81 year-old business executive from
Washington DC recognized that the military personnel in our
country could not afford to send their children to college. He
now pays the tuition, room, board, and expenses for 107 military
sons and daughters across the country. Fisher chooses each
student personally, based on their desire to help others in their
community. He says, 'We make a living by what we earn, but we
make a life by what we do for others.'"
