Traditions - Other Traditions

Reunions sometimes provide kindred spirits for the child who is not getting along well with his or her own parents but lives far away from extended family. One family we know meets in a different part of the country every five years, others have annual reunions at the "homestead"-the place where the second generation siblings grew up.

Another family has the children work on a play which is presented to the adults at an annual get together. Other ways could be explored to suit the talents of the children involved. Those who are handy might construct a shed, tree house, gazebo or anything the family might desire-and something different each year. Artistic children might work on a mural, or photograph family members for an heirloom album. Gardening is something families can do together which gives satisfaction and pride to the participants. Each member could have a special plot as well as contributing to the whole. If there is a vegetable garden all can enjoy the fruits of even the youngest child's labor. Likewise the flowers planted by a child and used to adorn the family table can develop self-worth and a sense of accomplishment in the child.

Photo Albums and Family Trees show relationships over time and are often the most precious things a family owns. Roots and history give family members a sense of belonging, and the security and meaning which comes from continuity.
