Family disaster stories are usually plentiful, short and recount occurrences within the memory of some listeners. These stories are verified, corrected and even embellished with each telling, depending on the audience. They reassure new young listeners that although unfortunate things do happen they belong to a family that is used to handling the unexpected with a sense of adventure and good humor.
Car stories are favorites:

The engine developed a crack 1,500 miles from home and the family spent the hot Texas day in an air conditioned movie theater and made a "run for home" in the cool of the night.
The transmission broke on a camping trip and all us kids had to jump out and push the Volkswagen bus whenever the reverse gear was needed. That was the time we stayed two days in Tiny Town because we had to wait for parts so that repairs could be made.
