Family Stories

Stories That Warn

Sometimes these stories are referred to as cautionary tales. Like Aesops Fables, they teach lessons about what works and what doesn't work.; they instruct and entertain. Reciting family experiences works well with older children but we suggest classics, like the suggestions that follow, for the youngest children.

The Ugly Duckling teaches hope--don't despair Chicken Little teaches the need to evaluate information before making a judgment Tortoise and the Hare warns against haste and over-confidence and teaches steadiness and endurance. The Little Red Hen warns that those who don't labor don't deserve the fruits of labor. The Ant and the Grasshopper, warns against living only for today. The Boy Who Called Wolf warns against raising false alarms.

Uncle Jack had a gambling addiction which cost him his home and his family. He was in terrible shape when he met Aunt Barbara. She provided the inspiration he needed and gave meaning to his life. He is a productive member of society now, but his children have been unable to forgive him for the suffering he put their mother through.

Cousin Shirley quit her job and was unable to secure a replacement.

Jane's brother-in-law cheated during his marriage so it is little wonder that his son is doing the same thing.

Andrew married too young and was unable to live up to the responsibility.

My aunt was overly picky in her search for Prince Charming and at age 62 she is still looking.
