There used to be a connection between school and the real world. Students knew they were being prepared to face the normal ups and downs of life and to cope and make a living. As more and more youngsters went off to college, somehow the relevance of learning was lost; somehow they failed to understand that what is learned in school (good habits, analytical ability etc.) should transfer to the work place. English i.e grammar, punctuation, spelling, pronunciation, is seldom found in the workplace Math and science skills fare no better. Students need to make a connection. Training is expensive for business and is commonplace. A high school diploma signified a certain level of competency at one time; competency an employer could count on. Both high school and college diplomas have such diverse and generally little significance today that many businesses are forced to administer their own examinations in order to determine competency.
Author Marvin Cetron claims business spends $ 82 billion/year to train employees both graduates and non graduates of both college and high school. The Volunteer Corps can change all this. The Volunteer Corps will expose young people to real life learning!! They will use their skills in the trenches, so to speak. The honors they received will be based on objective dependable criteria and will eventually be universally recognized.
